PLEXIGLAS® film protects and enhances cross-country skis
- Great demand for PLEXIGLAS® films for laminating cross-country skis
- PLEXIGLAS® films are ideal for winter sport equipment
- Printed designs can be easily applied and the films are resistant to weathering
Outdoor sports are all the rage right now, as exercising outdoors helps keep the lockdown blues at bay. And with lots of snow and sunshine during this winter, the demand for cross-country skis has increased dramatically – and with it, the demand for PLEXIGLAS® films. They are both a protective and decorative overlay for cross-country skis and provide a vibrant and high-quality look. Röhm supplies these high-performance films for renowned manufacturers of sporting goods.
PLEXIGLAS® films are made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the same raw material used to make sheets of the original acrylic glass from Röhm. These films are manufactured in thicknesses of between 50 µm and 1,000 µm and are used in a variety of applications.
Resistant to UV and weather conditions, come snow or shine
As winter sport equipment is exposed to both intense sunlight and wet, cold and snowy conditions, all materials used must be very robust. PLEXIGLAS® films meet this requirement, as they have a high surface hardness and are equipped with various levels of UV absorbers, depending on the variant. This means the brand product from Röhm is extremely resistant to UV and weathering.
Lively prints for an enhanced brand image
The ability to apply a decorative pattern to the film is just as important as its protective function, as each ski represents the brand of the manufacturer. PLEXIGLAS® films are completely colorless and can be printed on both sides using screen printing, digital printing and flexographic printing processes. Accordingly, brand logos and lettering can be printed on the film in high resolution and in true colors. As the UV protection inherent to the film prevents the colors from fading, they retain their vibrant appearance throughout the entire life cycle of the cross-country skis.
PLEXIGLAS® films are printed on a flat surface and then laminated onto the skis. Thanks to their good plasticity, the films perfectly adjust to the shape, while their processing properties during printing, back injection and thermoforming enable great freedom of design.
Contribution to a sustainable production process
In addition, PLEXIGLAS® films contribute to the sustainable and resource-friendly production of cross-country skis. Firstly, Röhm can supply the films in widths required by each customer, thereby ensuring as little material is used as required. Secondly, any unavoidable cuttings generated during further processing are almost completely recyclable.
Thanks to their diverse material properties and high processability, PLEXIGLAS® films harbor great potential for further applications in the winter sports segment. More information can be found at https://www.plexiglas.de/en/products/plexiglas/plexiglas-europlex-films.
