Power generation optimized in Worms
Röhm operates an efficient combined heat and power plant to generate its own electricity at the Worms site, Germany. This plant, which is designed for the thermal utilization of production waste (tail-gas), has also been fueled by natural gas since 2020, in order to increase the generation of electricity for operations and systems on site. This allows to buy in significantly less electricity from our power supplier and optimize existing power production systems.
As there was little previous experience of co-firing with natural gas for power production at the Worms site, the Energy Supply Team implemented a number of measures here to significantly increase efficiency on the one hand, and, on the other, to allow up to 50 percent more electricity to be generated, depending on production network capacity. Therfore Röhm will be able to cover most of the electricity consumption at the Worms site through on-site power generation.
In addition to the aim of utilizing turbines and generators even more efficiently, the project also focused on generating the same amount of steam using less fuel, in this case natural gas. The Digitalization@Operations Team supported this through the integration of suitable control technology. This team can provide support during the optimization of existing systems, wherever measured variables and their specified limits require automated, simultaneous monitoring and the mode of operation is also to undergo economic optimization. Its work helps to lessen the load for plant operators and to free them up for the ever-changing challenges of production.
