Röhm opts for green energy procurement

“This is an important first step towards reducing Röhm’s CO₂ emissions by several ten thousand tonnes per year and lowering our carbon footprint,” says Steffen Wissel, Head of Energy Management at Röhm. The certificates, which are valid until 2023, are sourced from hydropower plants within the European energy network.

“As a second step, we are now looking into building plants at our sites for the direct production of electricity from renewable sources in order to reduce the quantity of purchased electricity in the medium term,” says Wissel. As it stands, the proportion of electricity currently produced by Röhm on site via cogeneration and the proportion of purchased electricity is about equal. Wissel adds, “According to the latest estimates, we could generate around ten percent of our electricity requirements ourselves using renewable sources at individual Röhm sites. This will increase our independence and enable us to make a direct impact in terms of our Track 2030 sustainability strategy.”

The efficient use of energy as well as the generation and utilization of renewable energy and raw materials are key tools for reducing CO₂ emissions in the long term and therefore for addressing climate change. By using these tools, Röhm is making a significant contribution to further decarbonizing the two particularly carbon-intensive sectors of energy management and industry.
